The origins of this breed of horse date coincide with the development of the United States, where their popularity is long standing, but because of their athletic ability coupled with strong willingness and their elegance coupled with stamina and heart, Saddlebreds are now prized by owners and breeders in many, many other countriesand the breed is utilized very successfully in many disciplines across the world.
The unique athletic ability of this breed, along with an extremely willing and trainable temperament, no matter what is asked, have earned them high international regard. Their temperament is extremely alert and curious, sensitively intelligent and very people-oriented.
This is a breed that from it s beginnings was adapted for special uses. The breed s valuable characteristics, their easy gaits, ability for facile movement, hardness, sure footedness and gentility were exceedingly useful for traveling distances over varying landscapes. Modern day shows for Saddlebreds, offer the traditional Tree-Gaiting, Five-Gaited and Fine Harness classes and in recent years the popularity of Pleasure classes and Western classes has risen sharply. Yet this horse competes successfully in endurance, trail, show jumping, dressage, Combined Driving , para-equestrian events and while not competitive with the Quarter Horse , they have been known to handle cattle quite well also.
In American, classes are supported in National Futurities; Sweepstakes; and the ASB Grand National. These programs all offer considerable cash prizes as incentives for breeding and exhibiting quality individuals in events all over the country.
Consistent characteristics define the unique conformation of Saddlebreds and over one hundred years of breeding and registration have garnered a sturdy, versatile and beautiful horse. The average height of the American Saddlebred is 15.3 hands, although 17 hands is not unknown, and there are no color restrictions. As in other breeds of horses, the uniting of bloodlines to highlight certain characteristics is the challenge of breeding and everyone hopes to breed a foal naturally inclined to perfect form in one discipline or another. This quest for perfect breeding combinations is a driving force in the competitive world of Saddlebreds.
From birth, a Saddlebred foal will display both a body type and an inherent Saddlebred way of going that is proof of its ancestry. The many useful characteristics that breed true are by design the very characteristics mankind values in an ideal horse. The exacting performances required in American of this breed in the show ring guarantees that the breed will continue to fulfill the same requirements that initiated the need and desire for the forming of the breed over 250 years ago.
Saddlebreds cannot run with the ground covering speed of the Thoroughbred, although they carry weight at speed, with no lack of endurance and stamina. They cannot top the Quarter Horse with sprinting speed, although they can spin and turn on a dime. All other tasks they can perform not only admirably and well, but with high elegance and style that never dilute heart, utter willingness or the capability to do .
The breed was formed from the English Thoroughbred and early easy gaited riding horses infused with Morgan and Standarbred blood, Saddlebreds were created to do all tasks required my humans with grace, style and thoroughness. Their height ( from 15 to 17 hands), the length and clean lines of leg, deep shoulders and other conformational characteristics allow them to excel in most disciplines popular today.
